==Annotation== 

The word askraka (acc. pl.), which occurs only once in the fourteenth chapter of Egils saga, is investigated in the article. Various theories exist regarding what animal the word refers to, but the predominant opinion is that it refers to a marten or a squirrel. Þórólfur aquires the animal´s pelt, along with beaver and sable furs, during his tax collecting expedition to Finland. It is unambiguously maintained by the author that these furs were considered a common and useful form of currency (i.e. used as tax), which refutes an older theory that askraki cannot refer to a squirrel as squirrels were too common to be considered particularly valuable. As well as discussing the meaning of the word, Naert posits its origins in an archaic form of the modern Finnish ''raha'' (”money”), namely ''*skraha'' (”fur-bearing animal, specifically a squirrel, that was used as currency or a commercial ware”). This explanation is supported by phonological features in the development of Finnish dialects. In view of the geographical descriptions in the saga of the region where Þórólfur traveled on his tax collection expeditions, Naert suggests that the word askraka is of Western Finnish origin. 

==Lýsing==

Orðið askraka (þf. flt.), sem kemur fyrir einungis einu sinni í fjórtánda kafla Egils sögu, er rætt í greininni. Til eru ýmislegar tilgátur um hvaða dýr orðið vísar til, en ríkjandi skoðun er sú að um mörð eða íkorna sé að ræða. Skinn dýrsins, ásamt feldum bjóra, safala, o.fl., er herfang Þórólfs eftir skattheimtuferð hjá Kvenum. Naert heldur því fram að slíkt skinn hafi verið algengt og hagnýtt form af gjaldmiðli (t.d. notað sem skattur), sem afsannar eldri kenningu um að askraki gæti ekki vísað til íkorna enda var íkorni of algengur til að teljast sérstaklega verðmætur. Auk umfjöllunar um merkingu orðsins er settar fram tillögur um uppruna þess í úreltu formi nútímafinnsku ''raha'' („peningar”), nefnilega ''*skraha'' („loðdýr, sérstaklega íkorni, sem notað var sem gjaldmiðill eða verslunarvara”). Vikið er að hljóðfræðilegum þáttum í þróun finnskra mállýskna sem styðja þessa útskýringu. Með tillit til landfræðilegrar lýsingar í sögunni á svæðinu þar sem Þórólfur fór í skattheimtuferð dregur Naert þá ályktun að orðið askraka sé af vesturfinnskum uppruna.
