==Annotation==

The "head" plays an important part in Egils saga and here the motif is analysed from the perspective of 12th and 13th century ideas. According to Bergljót, a new understanding of the structure of society is well demonstrated in Egils saga, in which we can discern ideological connections to European works, e.g. John of Salisbury's Policraticus. However, the saga also makes use of Norse narratological and poetic tradition, referring for instance to ragnarök during which wolves devour the sun and the moon. Kveldulf and his descendants, who rebel against the Norwegian kings, can in that sense be regarded as some sort of wolves threatening kingship. The father and the son's heads ('skalli' bald head and 'hattur' hat) play an important role when meeting the king and appear to be a play on words referring to the myth about Skoll and Hati. The wolf’s nature is present in the family and manifests itself in their aggressiveness, appearance and eloquence, which are directed against the king that they in a sense „swallow“. Bergljót considers this to be closely connected to the symbolism that developed in Europe around the same time and points out that in Arinbjarnarkviða, which bears the marks of a learned 13th century composition, a considerable amount of stress is put onto the heads of both Egil and the king.

==Lýsing==

„Höfuð“ er fyrirferðarmikið í Egils sögu og hér er það minni skoðað út frá hugmyndum 12. og 13. aldar manna. Hinn nýi samfélagsskilningur 12. aldar segir Bergljót að komi vel fram í Eglu og þar megi greina hugmyndatengsl við erlend verk, t.d.  Policraticus eftir John frá Salisbury. Sagan færi sér þó einnig í nyt norræna sagna- og kvæðahefð, vísi m.a. í ragnarök þar sem úlfar gleypi sól og mána. Kveld-Úlfur og afkomendur hans sem standa uppi í hárinu á Noregskonungum séu í þeim skilningi nokkurs konar úlfar sem ógni konungdæminu. Höfuð þeirra feðga (skalli og hattur) koma mjög við sögu þegar þeir fara á konungsfund og virðist með orðaleikjum vísa á goðsöguna um Skoll og Hata. Vargsnáttúran býr í höfði ættarinnar og lýsir sér í árásargirnd þeirra, útliti og málsnilld sem beint er gegn konungnum sem þeir „gleypa“ í vissum skilningi. Þetta telur Bergljót að sé nátengt táknmáli sem þróist á svipuðum tíma í Evrópu og hún bendir á að í Arinbjarnarkviðu, sem beri þess merki að vera lært 13. aldarverk, sé mikil áhersla lögð á höfuð bæði Egils og konungs.
