==Annotation== 

A phraseological study of Egils saga. The first chapter focuses on various aspects of phraseology and the definition and identification of phraseological units. The second turns to the phraseology of Old Norse and the presentation, description and analysis of various types of set phrases in Old Norse, with examples taken from Egils saga. In Chapter Three, Janus returns to verbal periphrasis and analyses the verb ''taka'' in the saga and how it combines with accusative noun objects. Janus concludes that the methodology he employs - "recording instances of allowable modification in a closed set of examples and looking for patterns that point to idiomaticity" (p. 182) - produced weak results and that the corpus for historical phraseological research in Old Norse must be expanded in order for future research on phraseology to be productive. The intrinsically text-based nature of historical phraseology makes research more complicated than that involving living languages, as native speakers can provide data on denotations, connotations, etc. Janus argues, however, that studies on phraseological units in Old Norse may lead to an improved understanding of the language. Where authorship is disputed, phraseology may also prove a better method of identifying an author than stylistic or statistical studies.

Um er að ræða könnun á máltækjum í Egils sögu. Í fyrsta kafla er fjallað um rannsóknir á þessu sviði og þær aðferðir sem eru notaðar til að bera kennsl á máltæki, en í öðrum kafla er fjallað um máltæki í norrænni tungu og varpað ljósi á ólík afbrigði fastra orðatiltækja sem koma fyrir í Eglu. Í þriðja kafla fjallar Janus um orðasambönd í sögunni þar sem sögnin ''að taka'' kemur fyrir og skoðar hvernig hún tengist nafnorðsandlagi í þolfalli. Hann kemst að þeirri niðurstöðu að sú aðferð sem hann noti leiði ekki til nægjanlega ábyggilegra niðurstaðna og telur nauðsynlegt að stækka textasafn það sem notað er til rannsókna á þróun orðtaka í norrænni tungu, svo fremi að menn vilji að rannsóknarsviðið taki framförum. Hann bendir á að það sé flóknara að rannsaka tungumál frá þessum sjónarhóli þegar aðeins er unnið með ritaða texta, þar sem ekki sé hægt að afla upplýsinga frá málhöfum um aukamerkingar, duldar tilvísanir o.s.frv. Janus telur engu að síður að rannsóknir á máltækjum í norrænu máli geti aukið skilning okkar á því, og þær geti líka veitt öruggari vísbendingar um hver hafi skrifað tilteknar sögur en rannsóknir sem aðeins fást við stílfræðileg eða tölfræðileg gögn.
