==Annotation== 
Wright analyzes the role of the skald as a “Saga-Hero” throughout Saga literature by focusing on six of the most well known skalds. She emphasizes the importance of skaldic verse-making and how the skald hopes to become famous, and it is implied that the saga character could also reflect the author through these verses. Then Wright debunks the one-dimensional concept of the poet, arguing instead that a skald had a multi-dimensional role in society. In accordance with the above criteria, Wright contrasts Egill Skallagrimsson with the four aspects of the skald which she considers consistent within story-telling techniques: the self-aware artist, the satirist, the eulogist and the magician. She uses Egil since he easily shows these four aspects throughout his poetry, highlighting his attempts to curse people through poetry, for example when he puts a horse's head on a pole and carves runes on the pole. Wright also discusses how skalds are sometimes similar to the gods that they belief in, in particular Odin.

Wright greinir hér hlutverk skálda sem „söguhetja“ í Íslendingasögum með því að einbeita sér að sex þekktustu skáldunum. Hún leggur áherslu á mikilvægi dróttkvæða í samfélaginu og hvernig skáldið vonast til að verða frægt af verkum sínum. Einnig bendir hún á að viðkomandi skáld og skáldskapur þess geti einnig verið eftir höfund viðkomandi sögu. Hún gagnrýnir þá hugmynd að skáldið sé einföld persóna og heldur því fram að það hafi margþætt hlutverk í samfélaginu. Í samræmi við ofangreindar hugmyndir tengir hún Egil Skallagrímsson við fjórar hliðar skáldsins sem hún telur að vera inngrónar í frásagnarhátt skáldasagna: meðvitaða listamanninn, satíristann, þann sem flytur lof og galdramanninn. Hún notar Egil sem dæmi vegna þess að hann sýnir með skýrum hætti þessar fjórar hliðar í gegnum skáldskap sinn. Hún leggur sérstaka áherslu á það hvernig hann notar skáldskapinn til að níða af fólki skóinn, t.d. þegar hann reisir Eiríki og Gunnhildi níðstöng og ristir rúnir á stöngina. Wright fjallaði líka um hvernig skáldum er stundum líkt við guðina sem þeir dýrka, ekki síst Óðinn.
