			An overview of academic debate about whether Egils saga’s author used Heimskringla as a source or vice versa, or whether both works have drawn on other, older sources. Berman explains the manifold links between the two texts, which broadly cover the same events. There are examples of parallel narratives being consistent but there are also examples of them completely contradicting each other. Berman says it is impossible to know for certain which work is older but that evidence in the saga points towards Egils saga being the younger work. Egla’s author’s loose treatment of historical facts makes it unlikely that Snorri had used the saga as a source when he wrote Heimskringla.

			Yfirlit yfir umræður fræðimanna um hvort höfundur Egils sögu hafi notað Heimskringlu sem heimild eða öfugt eða hvort bæði verkin hafi sótt til annarra, eldri heimilda. Berman gerir grein fyrir margvíslegum tengslum textanna tveggja, sem víða fjalla um sömu atburði. Dæmi er um að hliðstæðar frásagnir séu samhljóða en það eru líka dæmi um að þær séu í hreinni mótsögn hver við aðra. Berman segir að útilokað sé að vita fyrir víst hvort verkið sé eldra en þykir þó færra mæla því í mót að Egils saga sé yngra verk. Frjálsleg meðferð höfundar Eglu á sagnfræðilegum staðreyndum gerir það ólíklegt að Snorri hafi notað söguna sem heimild þegar hann skrifaði Heimskringlu.
