			The meaning of the adjective ''göfugr'' (e. noble) is examined in this article especially in the context of ''göfugr bær'' (e. noble farm) used to described Blindheimar in Egils saga. The only other example of the word in that context is to be found in the Bishops´ sagas where it is used in the superlative form ''allgöfgastr bær'' (e. the noblest farm) and shows evidence of a learned style of writing. The word is mostly used in Christian literature and Bjarni draws attention to the fact that the verb ''göfga'' (e. ennoble) initially signified ''að tilbiðja, dýrka, upphefja'' (e. worship, adore, deify). Although nothing contravenes this use of ''göfugr'' it does seem peculiar in describing a vassal’s farm, as it would be better suited to depict an earl’s or king’s abode. This discrepancy could be explained by the fact that the farm of Blindheimar was one of the manors in Norway in the 13th century. Gregoríus Jónsson was a descendant of Blindheimar and his epitaph was ''göfgastur lendra manna''(e. the noblest of vassals) and Bjarni puts forth a theory that Snorri Sturluson knew Gregoríus because they were at Earl Skúli’s court at the same time.

			Merking lýsingarorðsins "göfugr" er tekin til umfjöllunar sérstaklega í samhenginu "göfugr bær" en einungis eitt annað dæmi um notkun orðsins í því samhengi er í Biskupa sögum þar sem það er í efsta stigi: "allgöfgastr bær" og virðist bera merki lærðs stíls. Orðið er einkum notað í kristilegum bókmenntum, en Bjarni bendir á að sagnorðið "göfga" merki upphaflega "að tilbiðja, dýrka, upphefja". Þó að ekkert mæli gegn því að það sé notað um bæ kemur það skringilega fyrir sjónir á þessum stað í sögunni. Það ætti betur við lýsingu á bæ jarls eða konungs, en bærinn sem um ræðir í Egils sögu er einungis lends manns. Þetta gæti átt sér náttúrulega skýringu þar sem garðurinn sem um ræðir, Blindheimr, var á ritunartíma einn af höfuðbólum á þessu svæði í Noregi. Gregoríus Jónsson var einmitt af ættum Blindheimsmanna en hann fékk þau eftirmæli að hafa verið "göfgastur lendra manna" og þykir Bjarna líklegt að Snorri Sturluson hafi þekkt hann persónulega, því Gregoríus var á sama tíma og Snorri hjá Skúla jarli.
