			Reviews the evidence for the early use of the term höfuðlausn to describe the head ransom tradition in medieval Scandinavian poetry, and specifically in Egils saga in which the saga writer does not name the poem höfuðlausn. Egill’s head ransom poem is not included in all redactions and other manuscripts of the text which date back to c.1250. The poem is referred to in various ways, but Clunies Ross believes that the earliest text to call it höfuðlausn is from c.1350. In sources other than Egils saga, the term appears as early as c.1220, but never within the skaldic poetry itself.

			Clunies Ross kannar elstu heimildir þar sem hugtakið höfuðlausn er notað til að lýsa því þegar norrænt skáld bjargar höfði sínu með kvæði. Hún beinir sérstakri athygli að Egils sögu en athyglisvert er að höfundurinn notar ekki sjálfur hugtakið höfuðlausn um kvæðið. Höfuðlausnarkvæði Egils er reyndar ekki varðveitt í öllum elstu gerðum eða handritum sögunnar og þar er vísað til kvæðisins með ýmsum hætti en Clunies Ross sýnist að elsta dæmið um að það sé nefnt höfuðlausn sé úr Eglu-handriti frá því um 1350. Hugtakið höfuðlausn má hins vegar finna í eldri heimildum íslenskum, ein sú elsta er frá því um 1220. Orðið fyrirfinnst aftur á móti hvergi í textum dróttkvæða.
