			An exploration of ofljóst (punning substitution), a device associated with courting and defamatory verse, in skaldic poetry. Several examples of such substitutive paranomasia can be found in Egils saga, some involving an aspect of self-referentiality. In speaking of his feelings for Asgerd Bjarnadottir, Egil encrypts not only Asgerd’s name in a verse (verse 23) he recites to Arinbjorn but also possibly his own. In a second verse, this one recited to Arinbjorn’s sister Gyda (verse 36), he encrypts the names of Arinbjorn and possibly up to three others (Eirik Blood-axe’s, Gunnhild’s and his own). Yngvar’s gift to Egill of three sea-snail shells and a duck’s egg, outwardly simple and devoid of material value, may be seen as having a deeper thematic significance and again possibly encodes Egil’s name in a concrete visual pun (egg-geil). Sayer compares Egil’s use of ofljóst with that of Earl Rögnvaldur in Orkneyinga saga and speculates on the possibility of ofljóst being a stylistic device borrowed from Irish literary culture and explores the term’s possible roots in Irish scaraid (Lat. scindo).

			Sayers kannar hér fyrirbærið ofljóst, tækni sem oft er tengd ástar- og níðkvæðum. Nokkur slík dæmi má finna í Egils sögu, og það kemur líka fyrir að viðkomandi kvæði séu að einhverju marki sjálflýsandi. Þegar Egil tjáir tilfinningar sínar til Ásgerðar Bjarnadóttur er ekki nóg með að hann feli nafn hennar í kvæðinu (vísa 23) sem hann flytur Arinbirni heldur líka mögulega sitt eigið. Í öðru kvæði, sem Egill flytur Gyðu systur Arinbjarnar (vísa 36), laumar hann nafni Arinbjarnar en líka þremur öðrum nöfnum (sínu eigin, Eiríks blóðaxar og Gunnhildar). Þegar Yngvar gefur Agli að skáldalaunum þrjá kuðunga og andaregg er um að ræða gjöf sem virðist í fljótu bragði hafa enga aukamerkingu, en hún kanna samt að búa yfir táknrænni merkingu og jafnvel vísa til nafns Egils (egg-geil). Sayer ber notkun Egils á ofljóst saman við notkun Rögnvaldar Orkneyjarjarls á þessari sömu tækni og veltir fyrir sér hvort um sé að ræða stílbrigði sem eigi rót sína að rekja í írskri bókmenntahefð (því sem á latínu nefnist scindo).
