Interpretation of the verse of Skalla-Grímur. Böðvar says that the description of Skalla-Grímur is one of the best character-descriptions in Icelandic literature, and that the verse is in full accordance with Skalla-Grímurs personality. In this verse, Skalla-Grímur describes his morning work; he is arguing with his workers, who want to sleep longer. Böðvar however feels that Skalla-Grímur’s speech is directed to his tools, the sledge hammer and bellows that he calls “greedy for wind”, which is a sign of humour. The message of the verse is clear: to get rich, a blacksmith needs to wake up early. | |||

Annotation
Lýsing
Túlkun á vísu Skalla-Gríms. Böðvar segir persónu Skalla-Gríms vera eina af bestu persónulýsingum í íslenskum bókmenntum og vísan sé í fullkomnu samræmi við hana. Þar lýsi Skalla-Grímur morgunverkum sínum, annars vegar er hann að karpa við vinnumenn sína en hins vegar beinir hann máli sínu að því er virðist að verkfærum sínum og vinum, sleggju og belgi sem hann kallar vindfrekan og ber það vott um glettni. Boðskapur vísunnar er skýr: til að auðgast verður járnsmiðurinn að rísa snemma á fætur.
