Among the recordings of the Western Icelanders' ''rímur'' that have been preserved in the Þingborg museum in Washington, it is possible to find the ''vísa'' sung by Oddný Sigurðsson, where only two words are different from what we are accustomed to. The song has "go around with the vikings" instead of "go away with the vikings". Gísli says that this version is closer to the source, since the full rhyme of the fourth word of the ''vísa'' is conserved here, as well as the eighth one ("í kring/víking", line 4) and "mann/annan" (line 8). Gísli says that the ''vísa'' has come with Björn Breiðvikingakappi to middle America, where it was preserved (literally: that would have then preserved the ''vísa'') until it was brought to California, which was part of Mexico until 1848, when it was incorporated in the United States. Afterwards, only ninety years passed until the ''vísa'' was saved by the recording. | |||

Annotation
Gísli draws in a comic way upon on the oral transmission of one of Egill's lausavísur. Among the recordings of the Western Icelanders' rímur that have been preserved in the Þingborg museum in Washington, it is possible to find the vísa sung by Oddný Sigurðsson, where only two words are different from what we are accustomed to. The song has "go around with the vikings" instead of "go away with the vikings". Gísli says that this version is closer to the source, since the full rhyme of the fourth word of the vísa is conserved here, as well as the eighth one ("í kring/víking", line 4) and "mann/annan" (line 8). Gísli says that the vísa has come with Björn Breiðvikingakappi to middle America, where it was preserved (literally: that would have then preserved the vísa) until it was brought to California, which was part of Mexico until 1848, when it was incorporated in the United States. Afterwards, only ninety years passed until the vísa was saved by the recording.
Lýsing
Gísli fjallar á gamansaman hátt um munnlega geymd einnar af lausavísum Egils. Á upptöku með rímum Vestur-Íslendinga sem varðveist hefur í Þingborgarsafninu í Washington er m.a. að finna söng Oddnýjar Sigurðsson á þessari vísu þar sem einungis tvö orð eru ólík því sem við eigum að venjast. Hún syngur „fara í kring með víkingum“ en ekki „fara á brott með víkingum“. Gísli segir þessa útgáfu upprunalegri, enda sé hér haldið aðalhendingunni í fjórða vísuorði, líkt og því áttunda (í kring/víking (4. lína) og mann/annan (8. lína)). Gísli telur að vísan hafi borist með Birni Breiðvíkingakappa til Mið-Ameríku sem síðan hafi varðveitt vísuna þar til hún barst til Kalíforníu, sem var hluti Mexíkó fram til 1848 þegar það varð innlimað í Bandaríkin. Síðan liðu einungis níutíu ár þar til henni varð bjargað með upptöku.
