This article begins by comparing the familiar text of the A-redaction of Egils saga Skallagrímssonar with the texts of the B- and C-redactions, which were investigated many years ago by Jón Helgason but remain largely unpublished... It is shown to what extent C, which is not attested in any manuscript before the fifteenth century, possesses text-critical value vis-à-vis the two earlier redactions (Section 1). Further, it is argued that C has been interpolated from a manuscript of A at the place towards the end of the narrative where a commemorative strophe about Egill's friend Arinbjörn and an anecdote from Jómsvíkinga saga are quoted. This material is wholly wanting in B, which may here transmit an earlier stage in the development of the saga text than that represented in A and C (Section 2). The second half of the article describes and analyses the manuscript and printed witnesses to the C-redaction from the late middle ages to the end of the eighteenth century. ... (Sections 3-4).
