Annotation
In the article, Jónas Kristjánsson points out that we don’t know for sure if the íslendingasögur are as old as they are thought to be, which would be from around the end of the twelfth century or the beginning of the thirteenth century. Jónas argues that the sagas of the Sturlungar are an older literary genre that the íslendingasögur, but the main idea of the article is that Snorri Sturluson had created a new genre with Egils saga, the íslendingasögur genre, with the same form as Heimskringla, which he had written before. According to this hypothesis, Snorri Sturluson is the founder of the íslendingasögur genre and a “pioneer” (p. 105) who set them in the trend that other writers would follow afterwards.
Lýsing
Í greininni bendir Jónas Kristjánsson á að við vitum ekki með vissu hvort Íslendingasögur séu eins gamlar eins og talið hefur verið, sem sé frá lokum 12. aldar eða frá upphafi 13. aldar. Jónas færir rök fyrir því að sögurnar í Sturlungu séu eldri bókmenntagrein en Íslendingasögur, en meginhugmyndin í greininni er sú að Snorri Sturluson hafi með Egils sögu skapað hina nýju bókmenntagrein, Íslendingasögur, með sama sniði eins og Heimskringlu, sem hann hafði áður ritað. Samkvæmt því er Snorri Sturluson upphafsmaður Íslendingasagna og sá „brautryðjandi“ (s. 105) sem kom þeim í þann farveg er aðrir skrifarar fylgdu síðar.
