This article begins by comparing the familiar text of the A-redaction of Egils saga Skallagrímssonar with the texts of the B- and C-redactions, which were investigated many years ago by Jón Helgason but remain largely unpublished... It is shown to what extent C, which is not attested in any manuscript before the fifteenth century, possesses text-critical value vis-à-vis the two earlier redactions (Section 1). Further, it is argued that C has been interpolated from a manuscript of A at the place towards the end of the narrative where a commemorative strophe about Egill's friend Arinbjörn and an anecdote from Jómsvíkinga saga are quoted. This material is wholly wanting in B, which may here transmit an earlier stage in the development of the saga text than that represented in A and C (Section 2). The second half of the article describes and analyses the manuscript and printed witnesses to the C-redaction from the late middle ages to the end of the eighteenth century. ... (Sections 3-4). The critical principles on which the projected Arnamagnæan edition of C will be based are very briefly summarised at the end (Section 5). | This article begins by comparing the familiar text of the A-redaction of Egils saga Skallagrímssonar with the texts of the B- and C-redactions, which were investigated many years ago by Jón Helgason but remain largely unpublished ... This article begins by comparing the familiar text of the A-redaction of Egils saga Skallagrímssonar with the texts of the B- and C-redactions, which were investigated many years ago by Jón Helgason but remain largely unpublished ...
Lýsing
Í greininni er hinn kunna A-gerð Eglu borðin saman við B-gerðina og C-gerðina, sem voru rannsakaðar af Jóni Helgasyni fyrir margt löngu en eru enn að mestu óútgefnar ... Sýnt er fram á að hve miklu leyti C-gerðin, sem ekki er varðveitt í neinu handriti frá því fyrir 1500, hefur gildi í samanburði við hinar gerðirnar (1. hluti). Jafnframt er því haldið fram að fyllt hafi verið inn í C-gerðina aftast í frásögninni með texta handrits A-gerðar þar sem erfikvæði um Arinbjörn og stutta frásögn úr Jómsvíkinga sögu er að finna. Þetta efni vantar alveg í B-gerðinni, sem kann að endurspegla eldri gerð texans en þá sem er að finna í A-gerð og C-gerð (2. hluti). Í síðari hluta greinarinnar er fjallað um handrit og prentaðar útgáfur frá síðmiðöldum fram að lokum átjándu aldar sem bera vitni um C-gerðina (3. og 4. hluti) ... Loks er fjallað stuttlega um forsendur fyrir væntanlega útgáfu Árnastofnunar í Kaupmannahöfn á C-gerðinni (5. hluti).
