Bredsdorf’s book covers the narrative pattern of a selection of Sagas of Icelanders with regard to their characters’ drive for dominance, lust for power and desire for love. In his discussion of Egils saga, Bredsdorf considers that in the saga the struggle for power and dominance is undeniably important, but that underneath is the clash between the desires of individuals and the rules of society which results in marriages that throw the social order off balance. At the root of Egill’s conflict with Eirík Blood-Axe and Gunnhildur is a kind of love-hate relationship between Gunnhildur and Egill which is not explicit anywhere in the saga but is only implied. This explains how recalcitrant Gunnhildur is from the beginning of their dealings and is manifested by, among other things, the sorcery which both characters have within their power.

Annotation
