Frásagnir í Eglu um höfuðbein skáldsins eru bornar saman við lýsingar á Pagets heilkenni (ostetis deformans), en það er fátíður beinsjúkdómur sem leggist oft á höfuðkúpuna. Þórður færir rök fyrir að Egill hafi þjáðst af af þessum sjúkdómi. Sjúkdómsgreiningin byggist á lýsingu sögunnar á hrörnun Egils í ellinni og einnig lýsingunni á höfuðkúpu Egils við beinaupptökuna í lok sögunnar.
