Andersson ber siðferði í Íslendingasögum saman við germanskt hetjusiðferði og tekur dæmi úr mörgum sögum. Hann kannar sérstaklega eðli hetjunnar, samband hennar við samfélagið, hvatirnar sem búa að baki hetjulegri framgöngu hennar og með hvaða hætti hetjan nýtur afreka sinna. Siðferðisheimur Íslendingasagnanna er borinn saman við boðskap Hávamála sem má líta á sem eins konar siðfræðirit. Andersson gerir samanburð á Agli og Þórólfi föðurbróður hans og bendir á að þó svo að Þórólfur sé dæmigerðari hetja í útliti og framgöngu þá bíður hann ósigur á meðan Egill fer með sigur af hólmi. Fullyrt er að Egla varpi ljósi á hve hrapallegar afleiðingar það geti haft að ætla að slá sjálfan sig til riddara (s. 588). (JA, tr. JKH)

Contrasts the morality of the Family Sagas with the Germanic heroic ethic, using examples from many sagas. Closely examines the nature of the hero, his relationship with society, the motivation behind his heroic actions and the way he is rewarded for his deeds. The ethics of the Family Sagas are considered in light of Hávamál as a type of moral treatise. Andersson compares Egil with his uncle Thorolf, noting in particular that Thorolf fails where Egil succeeds, despite Thorolf seeming to be more the heroic type. Egils saga is said to be commenting on “the unproductiveness of self-aggrandizement” (588). (JA)
