Annotation

Barði Guðmundsson examines the literary history of saga writing and compares the burning scene in Njáls saga to the burning of the Flugumýri homestead in Sturlunga saga. This article is an analytical comparison, in which Barði compares the motives and actions of the characters from each saga in order to present his argument of similarity. Barði presents evidence that the author of Njáls saga is using Sturlunga saga as a model, at least for the burning scene. Although historical evidence does provide some confirmation of a burning that took place at Njáll’s homestead of Bergþórshvoll, Barði points out that the literary episode as described in Njáls saga is heavily dependent on the Flugumýri episode in Sturlunga saga. For example, two men in each saga attempt to escape from the respective burnings by disguising themselves in women‘s cloaks. Barði notes that the dialogue spoken during the burning scene in Njála shows direct influence from Sturlunga saga’s Flugumýri incident. Barði also discusses the parallel use of stylistic word choice that is found in the narration of both Sturlunga saga and Njáls saga. Both sagas use nearly the same words to describe the burning of the buildings.
