Annotation

In Egils saga it is told how the stubborn, harsh and talented Icelander, Egill Skallagrímsson, gains an exceptional status at the Anglo-Saxon court of Æthelstan of Wessex. Egill's verse is embedded in the prose narrative as is often the case with skaldic poetry. Some of it relates to the participation of Egill in a battle fought at the otherwise unknown Vínheiðr which has been identified with the battle of Brunanburh, 937 AD. Egill’s verse about the battle, with its portrayal of the death of his brother and the compensation paid by the king, expresses skaldic poetry at its best. This is a case of poetry becoming a historical source, although inaccurate and partial.

Í Egils sögu er lýst þeim framgangi sem hinn þrjóski, grófgerði og hæfileikaríki Egill Skallagrímsson hlýtur við hirð Aðalsteins Englakonungs. Líkt og svo mörg önnur dróttkvæði er kveðskapur Egils varðveittur sem hluti af lausamálsfrásögn Egils sögu, en hluti hans snýst um þátttöku Egils í orustunni á Vínheiði, sem hefur verið tengd við orustuna um Brunanburh 937 e.Kr., þar sem Þórólfur bróðir hans fellur og konungur greiðir honum bróðurgjöld. Umrædd kvæði eru skínandi dæmi um snilld hins dróttkvæða skáldskapar. Þessi kveðskapur hefur jafnframt sögulegt gildi, þrátt fyrir að hann sé á köflum ónákvæmur og gloppóttur.

Chapter 55: Þá kvað Egill vísu: "La Saga di Egill Skallagrímsson parla a un pubblico profondamente interessato alla poesia, straordinario fattore di coesione sociale nella Scandinavia medievale, sempre funzionale alla vita civile e politica. In questo senso i versi scaldici (…) sono la testimonianza più viva, nella più tarda cultura nordica dei secoli 13° e 14°, di una visione della storia fatta di rievocazioni tortuose e verosimili piuttosto che di certezze assolute." (p. 180).
