A structural analysis of the place and function of source references in Egils saga. These source references “contribute... to articulate a narrative attitude, which shows a double perspective of space and time and makes the rôle of the narrator obvious” (p. 10). Use of source references creates a “double present” of the time of action and the narrator’s time and represents a means for the narrator to show his position to both narrated matter and audience. Beck closes his paper by arguing that the question of the historical credibility of saga source references is a separate one that the findings of this analysis shed no light on but that a broader study of source references and narrative attitude in sagas would be valuable. | |||

Annotation
A structural analysis of the place and function of source references in Egils saga. These source references “contribute... to articulate a narrative attitude, which shows a double perspective of space and time and makes the rôle of the narrator obvious” (p. 10). Use of source references creates a “double present” of the time of action and the narrator’s time and represents a means for the narrator to show his position to both narrated matter and audience.
