The dating of Íslendigadrápa, which includes poems on the greatest heroes of the Íslendingasagas including Egill Skalla-Grímsson, is taken under critical revision. The article is a reaction to Jónas Kristjánsson article „Íslendingadrápa and Oral Tradition“ from 1975. Jónas’ theory is that the poem is from the 12th century, which would prove that the stories of Egill and other heroes were preserved in oral tradition from the Saga Age until the time they were written. Bjarni, on the other hand, concludes that the poem could as easily be from the 13th century because the author of the poem, like the author of Egils saga, was rather a poet than a historian. Consequently the poem is not a reliable source, notwithstanding the fact that the author might have relied on oral or written sources.

Aldur Íslendingadrápu er tekinn til gagnrýninnar endurskoðunar en þar segir frá helstu köppum Íslendingasagna, þar á meðal Agli Skalla-Grímssyni. Greinin er andsvar við kenningum Jónasar Kristjánssonar sem hélt því fram í grein sinni „Íslendingadrápa and Oral Tradition“ frá 1975 að kvæðið væri 12. aldar kvæði og sannaði að sögur þessara kappa hafi varðveist í munnmælum frá söguöld og fram til ritunartíma þeirra. Bjarni kemst að þeirri niðurstöðu að kvæðið gæti allt eins verið frá 13. öld. Líkt og höfundur Egils sögu hafi höfundur drápunnar fremur verið skáld en sagnfræðingur og þar af leiðandi sé drápan ekki áreiðanleg heimild þrátt fyrir að höfundurinn hafi mögulega stuðst við munnlegar eða ritaðar sagnir.
