Campbell conducts a linguistic anaylsis of “Brunanburh” considering place naming of early writers in Old English chronicles. He examines and deconstructs contemporary theories concerning the site of the battle based on various accounts. Despite several discrepancies with the depiction of the Battle of Vínheiði in Egils Saga, he states that the saga is a source of Brunanburh, but must be treated with skepticism concerning the historical site, events, and scale of the battle.

Campbell greinir málfræðilega texta kvæðisins “The Battle Brunanburh” og beinir í því sambandi sérstaklega sjónum að staðarnöfnum í skrifum forn-enskra annálaskrifara. Hann gerir grein fyrir og endurskoðar fyrri kenningar fræðimanna um það hvar orustan hafi verið háð. Chapter 52: Borg ein stóð fyrir norðan heiðina:"it is evident that Egils Saga must be treated with the greatest caution and that none of its statements relative to the battle on Vinheithr must be taken as true of the battle of Brunanburh unless they are confirmed by independent sources. This is equivalent to saying that it must be regarded as contributing nothing to the subject, until it is corroborated by new material" (p. 78).
