Brekkan believes that because the original writer of Egil's Saga followed an oral tradition, which he believed implicitly, he did not tell the story linearly or explain character motives for the readers’ sake. Rearranging the plot’s chronology, Brekkan suggests that the reason Egil repeatedly undermines Thorolf is his secret love of Asgerd. This partly explains why Egil is much closer and more loyal to Arinbjorn than his own brother. Only through losing his sons and composing Sonatorrek is Egil able to master his familial grief and become a true family man. Brekkan argues that his reading of the saga makes Egil a far more sympathetic character.
