Annotation

Njáls saga, the “Queen of the Icelandic sagas,” connects to historical reality. Thanks to this connection, it can be assumed that the mentalities and practices depicted in the saga are accurately representative of then-contemporary social and cultural norms and values. Honor, reputation, and fame were most desirable. These were often tied to combat and physical prowess. Wisdom and cleverness, however, were required to restrain and direct strength and aggression, as the former, more intellectual attributes served as the source of ethics and morals in the North. Retaliation, for example, was expected; to not seek vengeance was dishonorable, but obtaining it only led to more evil and death. The introduction of Christian morals and principles is, at least in Njáls saga, what allowed the cycle of revenge to be broken, as embodied in the tale of reconciliation between Flosi and Kári.
