Annotation

Heinrichs investigates on the relation between Egill and Gunnhildur and compares on one side her influence and on the other the influence of Ásgerður on the inner life of Egill. She shows that Egill and Gunnhildur are both skilled in magic and related to the diabolic, the frantic and the wild, but their enmity is rooted in their mental state. They meet four times, but the feud between them is a battle upon life and death where Gunnhildur stands for the evil existential principle that Egill needs to resist. On the other side, Ásgerður represents the good one, that gives Egill tranquility and relief. The comparison of the two women who are most important to Egill sheds light on the principles of his life, the dualism that constitutes a red thread in the saga and gives it a mythical dimension.

Lýsing

Heinrichs rannsakar samband Egils og Gunnhildar og ber saman annars vegar áhrif hennar og hins vegar áhrif Ásgerðar á sálarlíf Egils. Hún sýnir að þau Egill og Gunnhildur eru bæði göldrótt og tengd við hið djöfullega, óða og villta en fjandskapur þeirra á rætur í andlegu ástandi þeirra. Þau hittast fjórum sinnum en deilan þeirra á milli er barátta upp á líf og dauða þar sem Gunnhildur stendur fyrir hið illa lögmál tilverunnar sem Egill þarf að standast. Ásgerður táknar hins vegar það góða sem veitir Agli ró og frið. Samanburður á þeim konum sem skipta Agli mestu máli leiðir í ljós lögmál lífs hans, tvíhyggjuna, sem er rauður þráður í sögunni og gefur henni goðsagnakennda vídd.
