Hill gerir fyrst grein fyrir söguþræðinum í köflum 44 og 45 í Eglu og heldur því fram að ef við lítum á þessa kafla sem skáldskap (hugsanlega byggða á raunverulegum atburðum) ættum við mögulega að lesa og skilja þá sem táknræna frásögn með goðsögulegum tilvísunum. Hill færir rök fyrir því að frásögnin, sem snýst m.a. um mjöð, uppköst, blóð og kveðskap, sé bergmál af goðsögunni um Kvasi og skáldamjöðinn í Snorra Eddu. Hann bendir á að síðasta málsgreinin í dróttkvæðinu sem Egill kveður áður en hann drepur Bárð (þar sem talað er um regn þegna Óðins), vísi beint í norræna goðafræði. Í niðurstöðu sinni nefnir Hill að skáldskapur og ölvun geti bæði valdið blessun og bölvun. Á sama hátt er hægt að skoða persónu Egils, sem er bæði göfug og ruddaleg, rétt eins og skáldskapurinn getur verið.
