In the article the author examines and compares sources on Eric bloodaxe, then he questions whether Eric ruled over Northumberland at the time of Æthelstan king of England, which is described in ''Egils saga'', and ''Heimskringla''. However many historic sources contradict this, for example in some English annals Eric is said to have been king at Jórvík at the time of Edward I. The author points to the fact that according to the biography of Cathró of Metz, which is published in W.F. Skene’s collection on the history of Scotland, there is a consistency with the Icelandic source and Eric bloodaxe is said to have ruled Northumberland at the time of Æthelstan, though the descriptions are not exactly the same.

Annotation

In the article the author examines and compares sources on Eric bloodaxe, then he questions whether Eric ruled over Northumberland at the time of Æthelstan king of England, which is described in Egils saga, and Heimskringla.
