Annotation

This article looks at the 1961 rewriting of Njáls saga, Fire in the Ice by Dorothy James Roberts. The four aspects that are taken into consideration by Jón Karl Helgason are Roberts‘ sense of Icelandic history, geography, narration, and audience. Through these aspects, he gives positive criticism of Roberts‘ efforts and asserts that the reading and interpretation of any saga, whether it be translated or rewritten, is determined by the individual reader and their personal experiences.

Chapter 33: og spurði hvað kvenna hún væri : “This passage gives an idea of Roberts’ narrative control. The sentence ,Hallgerda let her eyes show a flicker of surprise,‘ for instance, carries a meaning quite different from ‚Hallgerda’s eyes showed a flicker of surprise‘ that would be closer to the traditional saga style”.
