==Annotation== 

The definition of 'old' in the sagas is more closely tied to a person's physical condition than his or her biological age. Old age brings with it infirmity and an inability to work; 'old' women and men had few functional roles in Icelandic society and thus lost status and respect. Jón Viðar cites the description of Egill Skallagrímsson as an 'old' man as an ageist narrative representative of the prevailing attitude towards the elderly in Iceland during the period 900-1300. The 'old' are portrayed negatively and frequently associated with the grotesque in saga narratives, although Hávamál and several religious texts do have positive things to say of old age. All members of society were required to belong to a household, and wealthier households could care for their own 'old'. Few elderly persons moved in their old age to other family members outside this household - Egill, who moved to his foster-daughter's household, is not representative in this respect. In some cases, a church or monastery would maintain 'old' individuals, but others had to rely on the commune, which became an increasingly important social institution after 1270.

Skilgreining á elli í sögunum er tengdari líkamlegu ástandi persónu en líffræðilegum aldri hennar. Ellinni fylgir veiklun og getuleysi til vinnu; „gamlar" konur og menn höfðu litlu hlutverki að gegna í íslensku samfélagi og glötuðu því stöðu sinni og virðingu. Jón Viðar vitnar til lýsingar Eglu á hinum aldraða Agli Skalla-Grímssyni og telur til marks um ríkjandi viðhorf til ellinnar á Íslandi á tímabilinu 900 til 1300. Þeim „gömlu" er lýst á neikvæðan hátt og þau iðulega tengd hinu gróteska í frásögnum sagnanna, þó svo að Hávamál og vissir trúarlegir textar hafi sitthvað jákvætt að segja um ellina. Allir í samfélaginu þurfa að tilheyra tilteknu heimili, og á ríkmannlegri bæjum gátu menn sinnt þeim „gömlu". Fá dæmi eru um að fólk hafi á efri árum flust af heimili sínu til annars úr fjölskyldunni utan heimilisins - þegar Egill flytur til fósturdóttur sinnar er það ekki dæmigert. Í einhverjum tilvikum tóku kirkjustaðir eða klaustur að sér „gamalt" fólk en aðrir þurftu að treysta á hreppinn sem varð stöðugt mikilvægari stjórnvaldseining í samfélaginu eftir 1270.
