Halvdan Koht describes Egill as a great and strong poet who started composing poetry about fighting and killing at an early age, which he then later acted out. Koht makes a connection between Ibsen and Egill; Ibsen often refers to Egill in his writings about the Norwegian fight for independence from Sweden in the second half of the 19th century. Ibsen also alludes to Sonatorrek by Egill by making the death of a young son the topic for his play ''The Vikings at Helgeland''. Koht relates that as a whole, Egil’s poems are characterized by originality which is the result of his great vocabulary and his creativity.

Annotation

Halvdan Koht describes Egill as a great and strong poet who started composing poetry about fighting and killing at an early age, which he then later acted out. Koht makes a connection between Ibsen and Egill; Ibsen often refers to Egill in his writings about the Norwegian fight for independence from Sweden in the second half of the 19th century. Ibsen also alludes to Sonatorrek by Egill by making the death of a young son the topic for his play The Vikings at Helgeland. Koht relates that as a whole, Egil’s poems are characterized by originality which is the result of his great vocabulary and his creativity.
