Annotation

Hallvard Lie takes exception to the common theory that Egill Skallagrímsson had learned his runhenda either from Old English riming poets or from rimed hymns in the church in England. Instead he suggests that Egill may have learned the trick of riming from exorcism rituals used at his own prímsigning, a text he feels sure Egill must have heard, if the saga is not wrong about this event in his life.

Lýsing

Hallvard Lie hafnar þeirri algengu kenningu að Egill Skalla-Grímsson hafi numið runhendu frá forn-enskum rímkvæðum eða rímuðum sálmum í enskum kirkjum. Þess í stað heldur hann því fram að þegar Egill var prímsigndur hafi hann lært rím af þulum sem notaðar voru við slík tækifæri til að reka út illa anda. Lie er sannfærður um að Egill hafi heyrt farið með slíkar þulur, hafi sagan á réttu að standa um þetta atvik í lífi Egils.
