In this article, Jonna Louis-Jensen discusses whether Snorri Sturluson can be seen as the author of both Heimskringla and Egils saga. She points out that it seems that nowadays it is taken as a truth that Snorri Sturluson has written them both, as can be seen from the fact that Egils saga is a part of the new edition of Snorri Sturluson’s complete works from 2002.

The assumption that Snorri Sturluson wrote both Heimskringla and Egils saga are for the most part based on the work of Peter Hallberg. In the 1960s he analyzed the two texts in terms of their language, and compared them with other texts from the same time (i.e. Laxdæla saga). By the use of so-called “pair-words”, Hallberg found a great similarity between Heimskringla and Egils saga in their use of language. Louis-Jensen acknowledges the similarities between the works, but claims that this is not enough to attribute Egils saga to Snorri Sturluson.

Jonna Louis-Jensen also criticizes Hallberg for adjusting the statistics that he presents in his work. In this article, Louis-Jensen presents her own findings, by using the same method as Hallberg used in the ‘60s. Louis-Jensen’s findings show less similarity between Heimskringla and Egils saga than previously claimed.
