Í þessari grein er fjallað um orustuna á Vínheiði, sem er mikilvægur þáttur í Egils sögu. Magnús skoðar verk nokkurra sagn- og bókmenntafræðinga og bendir á hvað í þættinum á sér rætur í sögulegum staðreyndum og hvað er líklega skáldskapur. Hann hrekur kenningu Sigurðar Nordals sem lýsir þættinum sem blöndu af staðreyndum og skáldskap. Samkvæmt Magnúsi er óhugsandi að smáatriði sögunnar myndu hafa lifað um aldir í munnmælum meðan sögulegt samhengi þeirra er óljóst. Egill og menn hans tóku, til dæmis, þátt í orustunni á Vínheiði án þess að skilja algerlega alla viðburði sem þeir blönduðu sér í (smáatriði sögunnar), en tímaröð orustanna sem hér er um að ræða er ekki greinilega þekkt (sögulegt samhengi).
