Annotation

Messuti discusses the uses of a comparison between Egil's Saga and The Poem of the Cid. He places Egil's Saga in the context of a medieval narrative that includes Beowulf, The Chanson de Roland, and The Poem of the Cid, but argues that it most resembles The Poem of the Cid in their shared realism and exactitude with which facts are presented. He compares several common themes and narrative elements shared by the two texts. After establishing these similarities, Messuti uses Egil's Saga to approach the problematic use of verbs in the singular ascribed to dual substantives in The Poem of the Cid just as they are in Arinbjarnakvida when referring to Freyr and Njörðr. Messuti ultimately attributes this to Indo-European roots.
