Samkvæmt Torfa sprettur Egils saga ekki af munnlegri hefð, eins og oft er haldið fram, heldur frekar fullþroskuðum bókmenntahefðum. Horft er á þrjú sérkenni skáldsagna: a) tengsl tíma og staða í sögunni, b) raunsæiseinkenni sögunnar og c) þann stíl sem er notaður í Egilssögu.
