In this article, Mattias Tveitane writes about the oldest printed edition of ''Egils saga'', a Danish-Norwegian translation of the saga, which appeared in three different editions in the eighteenth century. Only the second of these three editions is still preserved, in the Bergen University Library. Tveitane provides evidence for the existence of the two other editions as well as discussing the date of the printing of these three editions. The third edition is the only edition to be safely dated. This edition was printed in 1751, but is now lost. According to Norwegian and Danish lists of bibliography (lists of known texts and literature), the first printed edition of ''Egils saga'' was printed in 1738. Tveitane provides evidence in the form of a letter from 1728 that describes a printed edition of the saga. By this, he proves that the first edition must have been printed before December 1728.
