Annotation

The article mostly deals with the poems Höfuðlausn, Arinbjarnarkviða, and stanza 36 in the saga, and the connections between them. The relationship between these, Vogt states, is diametric. The conclusion drawn from his investigation is threefold: Firstly, that in Höfuðlausn Egill does not seem to position Eiriks’s deeds above that of his men, while simultaneously openly praising his own diction. Secondly, that the narrative describing Gunnhild in York was from the outset inspired by folktale motifs, since her use of magic there is substantial for the saga’s development. Thirdly, he suggests that the author of Höfuðlausn invented a Christian-chivalric motif relating to Arinbjorn to solve any contradictions between Höfuðlausn, Arinbjarnarkviða and stanza 36.

Lýsing

Greinin fjallar einkum um kvæðin Höfuðlausn og Arinbjarnarkviðu og tengsl þeirra, auk 36. vísu sögunnar. Vogt telur að andstæður marki tengsl allra þriggja. Niðurstöður athugunar hans eru þríþættar: Í fyrsta lagi að í Höfuðlausn skipi Egill Eiríki konungi ekki skör ofar mönnum sínum, um leið og hann hrósar eigin frammistöðu opinskátt. Í öðru lagi að frásögnin af Gunnhildi í Jórvík sé innblásin af þjóðsagnaefni úr því að galdrar hennar skipti sköpum fyrir framvindu sögunnar. Í þriðja lagi telur hann að höfundur Höfuðlausnar hafi sett persónu Arinbjarnar í kristilegt riddarasamhengi til þess að sætta andstæður milli Höfuðlausnar, Arinbjarnarkviðu og 36. vísu.
