Annotation

The main argument of this work is that Egil's saga was composed by one inconsistently working author. Vogt claims that chapters 1–66 of the saga constitute a closed, one-stringed composition, while the rest of the saga disperses into a two stringed narrative. Therefore, he supposes that the latter part (ch. 67 onwards), must be older and less coherent. The first part, on the other hand, is younger and shows both unity in language, structure of speech and composition, which hints at an author’s thought process. For the second part, the author maintained the folk-like structure of the material at hand and simply intertwined it with the former part.

Lýsing

Meginhugmynd bókarinnar er að Egils saga sé verk eins höfundar sem ekki hafi fylgt sömu stefnu út alla söguna. Vogt heldur því fram að kaflar 1–66 myndi lokaða heild með einum söguþræði en að afgangur sögunnar kvíslist í tvo þræði. Hann gerir þess vegna ráð fyrir því að síðari hlutinn (kafli 67 og áfram) hljóti að vera eldri og samhengislausari. Fyrri hlutinn sé hins vegar yngri og hafi yfir sér heildstæðan blæ að því er varðar mál og byggingu, sem gefi til kynna að höfundarvitund búi að baki. Í síðari hlutanum hafi höfundurinn haldið þjóðsagnaeinkennum þess efniviðar sem hann nýtti sér og einfaldlega fléttað hann saman við fyrri hlutann.
