==Annotation== 
Van Hamel focuses his attention on Egill’s personal religious experience as portrayed through ''Sonatorrek''. According to him, in the Old Norse worldview humans viewed gods  predominantly as mediators or even friends. Van Hamel classifies Egill as a mourning parent who unsuccessfully seeks revenge. His inability is caused by the two sea demons Ægir and Rán who killed his son. Demons couldn’t be sued nor fought as means of revenge. Egill sees revenge as both his right and duty, but his inability to act upon this revenge makes a subsequent catharsis impossible. Over the course of the poem ''Sonatorrek'', Egill makes three attempts to avenge his son’s death, of which only the last attempt is successful. The attempts have a similar outline. First the cause of the sorrow is explained. Secondly, Egill expresses a deep sorrow subsequent to the inability. Lastly, he looks for vindinctiveness. However, at the end of the last attempt Egill calls Óðinn by name. This act turns out to be Egill’s catharsis, because he realises that language, and poetry in particular, is a gift from the gods. This gift allows Egill to write a manslaughter indictment to the sea demons, which can pass for a dignified revenge. Van Hamel stresses the power the gods give to the people. This supernatural enhancement is also named ''blóta'', and is considered to be optional within the Old Norse cosmology. Van Hamel uses ''blóta'' to underline the individual character of the Old Norse religion.
