The author talks about Egil’s journey to Jórvík in Egils saga and finds it interesting for two reasons, the first being Gunnhildur’s magical abilities and the second being Egil’s ignorance of the change in rules in Norway. However the author has his doubts about Eric’s bloodaxe rule in Northumberland at the time given in Egils saga, there are no evidence in English sources that support the timeline. The author points to certain inconsistencies in the sources regarding Eric’s escape from Norway and his life after the escape. Eric was, according to the sources, unpopular in England due to his - and Gunnhildur’s - cruelty and therefore would scarcely have lived in peace in England. Many stories exist on the downfall and death of Eric who also show the disparity from what is told in Egils saga. | The author talks about Egil’s journey to Jórvík in Egils saga and finds it interesting for two reasons, the first being Gunnhildur’s magical abilities and the second being Egil’s ignorance of the change in rules in Norway.
