Annotation
In this excerpt of his book Skáldasögur. Um uppruna og eðli ástaskáldasagnanna fornu, translated in German by Wolfgang Butt, Bjarni Einarsson discusses the foreign influences on the erotic thematic in the "skald's sagas" group: Kormáks saga, Hallfreðarsaga, Gunnlaugssaga ormstungu, Bjarnarsaga Hítdælakappa, Egils saga and Fóstbræðra saga. The first four sagas of this list revolve around the main character's thwarted love, and adapt a continental romance motive to the local context. They are influenced by the various Tristan poems and romances that were also used as source material for the Norwegian Tristrams saga. However, a similar treatment of the erotic motives cannot be found in Fóstbræðra saga and Egils saga, which present a different narrative context around the love strophes - mansöngsvísur, mansöngur - of Þormóðr and Egill.
