Um uppruna og eðli ástaskáldasagnanna fornu'', translated in German by Wolfgang Butt, Bjarni Einarsson discusses the foreign influences on the erotic thematic in the "skald's sagas" group: ''Kormáks saga'', ''Hallfreðarsaga'', ''Gunnlaugssaga ormstungu'', ''Bjarnarsaga Hítdælakappa'', ''Egils saga'' and ''Fóstbræðra saga''. The first four sagas of this list revolve around the main character's thwarted love, and adapt a continental romance motive to the local context. They are influenced by the various Tristan poems and romances that were also used as source material for the Norwegian ''Tristrams saga''. However, a similar treatment of the erotic motives cannot be found in ''Fóstbræðra saga'' and ''Egils saga'', which present a different narrative context around the love strophes - ''mansöngsvísur'', ''mansöngur'' - of Þormóðr and Egill. | |||

In this excerpt of his book Skáldasögur.
