Lýsing

Í greininni er fjallað um Sonatorrek sem heild og hvaða hlutverk kvæðið gegnir í sögunni. Höfundurinn sýnir fram á hversu stórt hlutverk Sonatorrek leikur í persónusköpun Egils – ljóðið varpar óvenjulegu ljósi á hann í sögunni – sem „einmana og viðkvæman mann“ (s. 36). Þá sannar kvæðið hve sterk áhrif Óðinn hefur á Egli en u.þ.b. helmingur af kenningum kvæðisins eru með einhverjum hætti tengdur við Óðin. Ennfremur lýsir höfundur kvæðinu í sögulegu samhengi, samhengi við söguna sjálfa og annan kveðskap Egils, aðallega Höfuðlausn og Arinbjarnarkviðu. Einnig er fjallað um ýmis þekkt álitaefni sem tengjast sögunni og kvæðinu. Í síðari helmingi greinarinnar birtir höfundur þýðingu sína á kvæðinu og skýringar einstakra erinda.
