Chapter 88: vingott væri með þeim Hallgerði: "By putting Hrapp in this sneaky way into Hallgerd's bed, the author is inviting us to see exactly what Hrapp's function is in the saga; he is there to fill out the portrait of Gunnar, …. Had Gunnar gone abroad when he was supposed to, he would surely, like Hrapp in Gunnar's absence, have returned to Hallgerd's bed. Hrapp also fills Gunnar's symbolic space when he makes it to a ship in the nick of time about the embark for Norway, Hrapp leaving, like Gunnar should have, to escape outlawry." (p. 155).
